Assamese Department

The Department aims to prepare students to become informed active citizens and also to make them know the gravidity of the obligation towards their mother tongue. The Undergraduate programmes emphasise the comprehension of Assamese Language and literature, the application of communication and analytical skills, and the understanding of socio-cultural diversity. Teaching and learning in the department is oriented in such a way that the students can relate well to their surrounding society and inculcate proper humanoid values. Besides conventional lectures, teachers engage the students in group discussions, assignments, presentations, tutorials, project work for the overall academic as well interactive and soft skill development of students. It is to be quoted with pride that the student enrolment rate in the department of Assamese Honours courses is the highest within the college. In this short period of time, many of the students of this department have revealed amazing potential in terms of literary arena, artistic expressions, sports, social activism etc. The Department is led by of a young and dynamic team of faculty members with diverse areas of interests/specialisation.

Special Felicitation Programme:

The Department of Assamese, Bir Raghab Moran Government Model College, Doomdooma Felicitated Dr. Nava Kumar Handique, retired HOD, Department of Assamese, former Dean, Humanities and Law, Dibrugarh University in his house in Duliajan on 23.10.2021. The HOD Dr. Pronita Neog along with Assistant Professors of dept. of Assamese Sri Nipom Kalita and Smt. Karobi Dutta visited Dr. Handique and talked to with him about some important aspects of modern pedagogy. They also interacted with the other members of Dr. Handique’s family and spent some valuable time. Dr. Handique appreciated the initiative of the Dept. of Assamese of the newly established Government model college and presented a few useful books for the college library.

Curriculum/Syllabus:

The Department of Assamese had started its maiden journey from December, 2020. The department currently offers three courses of study:

  • Under the B.A. Honours Programme, Assamese (Honours)
  • Communicative Assamese (AECC II)
  • Under the B.A. Non-honours Programme MIL Assamese (Non-honours)

Celebration of the 187 th birth anniversary of Hemchandra Baruah as “Anti Superstition Day” by Elora Vigyan Mancha, Doomdooma Branch in collaboration with the Department of Assamese, Bir Raghab Moran Government College, Doomdooma

The birth anniversary of Hem Chandra Baruah, the first Assamese lexicographer, is annually celebrated as “Anti Superstition Day” across the state. This time on the occasion of his 187 th birth anniversary, the Doomdooma branch of Elora Vigyan Mancha, in collaboration with the Assamese Department of BRMGMC, Doomdooma observed the day on the premises of the college on 10 th December, 2021. The programme began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp before a portrayed of Hem Chandra Baruah by the President, Tinsukia Zila Sahitya Sabha Arjun Baruah. Since the programme coincided with Swahid Divas, the Principal, BRMGMC Dr. Amorjit Saikia lit the lamp before the portrait of the first martyr of the historic Assam agitation Khargeswar Talukdar. Later, Dr. Pronita Neog, HOD, Dept. of Assamese delivered a lecture on Hem Chandra Baruah’s life and works, including his contribution towards eradication of superstitious beliefs that prevailed in society during those days. The President of the Doomdooma Elora Vigyan Mancha Dr. B. K. Ghosh, the Secretary Tarini Deka, Dr. Amorjit Saikia, Arjun Baruah, Assistant Professor Biswajit Sonowal and students Pompi Deka and Biplob Hazarika also spoke on the occasion.

International Mother Language Day Celebration

The Department of Assamese of Bir Raghab Moran Government Model College, Doomdooma observed the International Mother Language Day on 21 st February, 2022 in the college premises. The meeting held on the occasion was chaired by the Principal of the college Dr. Amorjit Saikia. The chief guest of the auspicious programme was Dr. Rinjumoni Sharma, HOD, Dept. of Assamese and Vice- Principal, Doomdooma College. The HOD of the Dept. of Assamese, BRMGM College dr. Pronita Neog explained the significance of the day while Dr. Sharma delivered a fruitful speech on the Assamese language as mother tongue. In this very occasion, quite a few assistant professors along with some students spoke in their own mother tongues which offered a pleasant moment for the listeners. As a part of the programme, Dr. Rinjumoni Sharma was felicitated by the Dept. of Assamese, BRMGM college and in this process, Sri Nipopm Kalita, Assistant professor gifted Dr. Sharma with a bunch of seven self-written and edited books which marked an incredible moment for the whole Department and college. Smt Karobi Dutta offered the vote of thanks at the end of the meeting.

Inauguration of Wall Magazine

A wall magazine titled ‘Madhukari’ prepared by the Literary circle of the Department of Assamese (Asomiya Sahitya Sora) was inaugurated on 27 th April, 2022. The inaugural programme was chaired by the Principal of the college Dr. Amorjit Saikia. Journalist Lalit Tanti lit the ceremonial lamp while
the Secretary Doomdooma Press Club Manoj Baruah inaugurated the wall magazine. The editor of “Madhukari’ talked about the magazine.
